George Robertson
Early Life and Political BeginningsBorn into a family of policemen on the Isle of Islay, George Robertson joined the Labour Party. He served as a Member of Parliament from 1978 to 1999.
Ministerial and NATO Roles
In 1997, Robertson became the UK's Secretary of State for Defence, a position he held until 1999. Following his election as Secretary General of NATO, he served in that capacity from 1999 to 2004.
Personal Life and Accolades
On June 1, 1970, Robertson married Sandra Wallace, and they have two sons and a daughter. He was knighted in 1999.
NATO Accomplishments
During his tenure as NATO Secretary General, Robertson oversaw the organization's enlargement to include Estonia, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary. He also played a key role in the establishment of the NATO-Russia Council.
