H2: Background and Early Life
Hussein Vakhayevich Gakayev (also known as Gakhin Vakhin Khusayn) was born on June 14, 1970, in the village of Elistanzhi, Chechnya. He was the fourth of six brothers in the Gakayev family. According to some sources, the Gakayev lineage included both Chechen and Arab ancestry.
H2: Involvement in Chechen Wars
Gakayev, along with his brothers, participated in both Chechen Wars (1994-1996 and 2000-2004). During the first war, he served in the Central Front of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria (CRI). Two of his older brothers, Jamalay and Sayd-Usman, were killed during this conflict.
In the second Chechen War, two more of Gakayev's brothers were killed: Hasan in 2001 and Rizvan in 2003. In 2006, his sister Manzha was abducted and later declared missing.

After the first Chechen War, Gakayev became known as the "amir" (leader) of the Elistanzhi village. He led his own militant group in operations in his native area.
In 2007, Dokka Umarov, the then president of CRI, appointed Gakayev as the Minister of Internal Affairs. He also served as Deputy Commander of the Southeastern Front from May 2007.
H2: Command Roles under Umarov
In 2007, Gakayev became the wali (governor) of the Chechen Vilayat of the Caucasus Emirate, a separatist organization founded by Umarov. He also held the position of Minister of Internal Affairs in the Chechen Vilayat government.
H2: Break with Umarov
In 2010, Umarov appointed Aslanbek Vadilov as his successor. However, Gakayev and Vadilov refused to acknowledge this appointment and withdrew their support for Umarov.
H2: Leadership of the Separatist Movement
In September 2010, Chechen field commanders reconstituted the Majlis-ul-Shura, a military council that had been disbanded during the previous years. They elected Gakayev as their new leader, granting him the title of Amir of Chechnya (Ichkeria).
H2: Assassination Attempts and Rewards
Gakayev faced numerous assassination attempts and was the target of a 10 million ruble reward announced by Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov. Kadyrov accused Gakayev of being behind a daring attack on his village, Tsentoroi, in August 2010.

The fate of Hussein Gakayev remains unclear. He is believed to have been killed in a clash with Russian forces in 2013, but his death has not been officially confirmed.
