William Keith: A Scottish Nobleman

William Keith, a Scottish nobleman, was the hereditary Lord Marshal of Scotland and a key figure in European politics during the 18th century.

Early Life and Career

Born into a prominent Scottish family, Keith served under the Duke of Marlborough in 1712. However, after Queen Anne's death, he supported the Jacobite cause and was exiled by Parliament.

Jacobite Rebellions

In 1719, Keith participated in a Spanish expedition to Scotland, but the rebellion was thwarted, forcing him to flee to Europe. He resided in Spain and Venice before settling in Berlin in 1747.

Friendship with Frederick the Great

In Berlin, Keith became close with King Frederick the Great, sharing his literary interests. The king appointed him ambassador to Paris in 1751 and governor of Neuchâtel in 1754.

Restoration of Rights

In 1759, Keith successfully petitioned the English government for the restoration of his rights and estates. He returned to Scotland and continued to play a significant role in political and literary circles until his death.
