Biography of George Kennedy
George Harris Kennedy Jr. was an American actor born on February 18, 1925, in New York City. He grew up in a show business family, with his father being a musician and band leader. Unfortunately, his father passed away when George was just four years old. He was raised by his mother, Helen Kieselbach, who was a ballet dancer. George came from a diverse heritage, with German, Irish, and English ancestry.
Early Life and Military Career
George made his debut on stage at the age of two and became a radio DJ by the age of seven. During World War II, he joined the US Army and served for 16 years, reaching the rank of captain. However, his military career was cut short when he suffered an injury that led him to pursue a new profession.
Acting Career
After leaving the military, George embarked on an acting career. He landed his first significant role as a military advisor in the sitcom "The Phil Silvers Show." This project also allowed him to work as a technical consultant. George's breakthrough came with his role as Dragline in the film "Cool Hand Luke" in 1967, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He went on to appear in numerous Hollywood films, including "The Dirty Dozen," "Airport," and "The Naked Gun" series.
Later Career and Personal Life
In addition to his film roles, George also appeared in several television shows, such as "Perry Mason" and "The Legend of Jesse James." He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to the film industry. George wrote three books, including his autobiography titled "Trust Me," which was published in 2011.
Outside of acting, George was a pilot and enjoyed flying his own planes, including a Cessna 210 and a Beechcraft Bonanza. He was married four times and had four children, including two with his second wife, Norma Wurman. George passed away on February 28, 2016, at the age of 91, due to heart disease.
