Early Life and Career
George Lazenby, an Australian actor, was born on September 5, 1939. After serving in the Australian Army, he dabbled in car sales to make ends meet. However, his true ambition lay in becoming a male model in London, where he relocated in 1964 (coincidentally, the same year Pierce Brosnan arrived and Ian Fleming passed away).
The Search for Bond
In 1968, the hunt for a new James Bond actor began due to Sean Connery's resignation. Despite lacking acting experience beyond commercial television, where he gained popularity through "Big Fry" Chocolate, Lazenby landed the role in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." He outshone other contenders such as John Richardson, Anthony Rogers, Robert Campbell, and Hans Vries during a fight scene audition.
On Her Majesty's Secret Service
Lazenby's tenure as Bond was marked by conflicts, including strained relationships with director Peter Hunt and Bond girl Diana Rigg. In hindsight, he acknowledges regretting his decision to decline subsequent Bond films, allowing Connery to reclaim the role. Nevertheless, his film remains a critically acclaimed entry in the Bond franchise.
Later Career
During the early 1970s, Lazenby based himself in Hong Kong and planned to collaborate with Bruce Lee on a film before the martial arts star's untimely demise. After a hiatus dedicated mostly to car racing, he resumed acting several years ago. He is a frequent guest at James Bond fan events.
