Early Life and Family

John Elroy Sanford was born in St. Louis, Missouri on December 9, 1922, to Freddie Sanford and Mary Carson. His father, an electrician and auto mechanic, left the family when John was four years old. As a result, he was raised by his mother, who was of Seminole Indian descent, and his maternal grandmother.

Early Career

In 1939, Sanford participated in the Major Bowes Amateur Hour on the radio. In September 1946, he recorded five songs for Savoy Records under the direction of Teddy Reig.

Success in Nightclubs and Las Vegas

Redd Foxx gained fame in the 1950s and 1970s as a nightclub comedian. Known as the "King of the Party Records," he made over 50 recordings. He was also one of the first African American comedians to perform for white audiences on the Las Vegas Strip.

"Sanford and Son" and Golden Globe Award

Foxx became widely known for his starring role in the comedy television series "Sanford and Son" (1972-1977). He won a Golden Globe Award for his performance in 1973.

Personal Life

John Sanford was married four times: to Evelyn Killebrew (1948-1951), Betty Jean Harris (1956-1975), Yun Chi Chung (1976-1981), and Ka Ho Cho (1991).

Death

Redd Foxx died on October 11, 1991, in Los Angeles, California. He suffered a fatal heart attack during a rehearsal for the television show "The Royal Family." He was interred in Palm Memorial Park (Green Valley) in Las Vegas.
