Biography of George Peppard

George Peppard was a fair-haired, blue-eyed, handsome actor known for his leading roles, who rose to stardom during the decline of the studio system. He started his career in radio and attended the Actor's Studio in New York, working on Broadway and television. His role in the film "The Stranger" in 1957 was a promising debut on the screen, and after successful roles in "Pork Chop Hill" in 1959 and "Home From the Hill" in 1960, he secured a contract for the film "Breakfast at Tiffany's" with Audrey Hepburn in 1961.

Rise to Stardom

Having established himself as a leading actor, Peppard played many tough guys, although he was "buried" in a large and prestigious ensemble cast for the film "How the West Was Won" in 1962 and in "The Victors" in 1963. He was a charismatic leading man, subtly portrayed Howard Hughes, in the inflated romance "The Carpetbaggers" based on Harold Robbins' novel, with Peppard in the lead role in 1964, starring alongside Elizabeth Ashley, who also played his wife on and off the screen.

Later Career

Most of Peppard's later films were action thrillers, westerns, or thrillers. In the 1970s, Peppard worked extensively on television, appearing in numerous forgettable TV movies, but achieving great success in the series "Banacek" from 1972 to 1974, "Doctors Hospital" from 1975 to 1976, and "The A-Team" from 1983 to 1987, where he played the stylish leading character with a perpetual cigar in his mouth.

In 1978, he wrote, directed, produced, and starred in the heart-wrenching film "Five Days From Home".
