Biography of Georges Rouault

Georges Rouault (1871-1958) was a French painter and graphic artist, known for his post-impressionist style. He was born in Paris on May 27, 1871. During his youth, he studied under a master of stained glass painting, where his unique artistic abilities first emerged. He later attended the School of Fine Arts, where he became a favorite student of Gustave Moreau.

Distinctive Style

Rouault's own artistic style, which fully developed by 1903, is characterized by its power and energy. The forms in his paintings are simplified or distorted, outlined with thick black contours, and colored in deep, vibrant hues. This technique was inspired by his early work in the stained glass studio of his first teacher. Rouault skillfully utilized this style to evoke tragedy in his religious-themed paintings or to reveal a mysterious force of evil in his depictions of contemporary characters. In 1910, he held his first solo exhibition.

Aside from his religious subjects, Rouault is also notable for his series of paintings from 1903 to 1907 depicting prostitutes and judges. These characters are interpreted by Rouault as embodiments of evil and moral decay in modern society. His friendship with writer Leon Bloy and his exploration of Christianity played a significant role in shaping his attitude towards these individuals. Rouault also incorporated the image of the clown in his work, which seemingly symbolized the plight of the artist or the prophet who is isolated from his peers.

Long and Varied Career

Rouault devoted extensive time to his artworks, often spending more than twenty years on a single piece. In 1947, he famously burned 313 of his paintings that he deemed to be of poor quality. Among his notable graphic works are the series "Miserere et Guerre" created between 1916-1918 and 1920-1927, as well as the colored engravings from the 1930s.

Georges Rouault passed away in Paris on February 13, 1958. His contributions to post-impressionism and his distinct style continue to be celebrated in the art world.
