Early Life and Political Activism
Georges Ibrahim Abdallah was born in a small Lebanese town near the Syrian border. He initially joined the Syrian Nationalist Party but abandoned it due to its right-wing and nationalist leanings. Abdallah later became a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and was wounded during Israel's 1978 invasion of southern Lebanon.
The Lebanese Revolutionary Armed Fraction
After the death of Wadie Haddad, Abdallah left the PFLP and founded the Lebanese Revolutionary Armed Fraction (LRF). The LRF aimed to liberate Lebanon from foreign influence (France, the US, Israel) and establish a Palestinian state.
Armed Attacks and Terrorism Convictions
During the 1982 Lebanon War, the LRF carried out several armed operations, including attacks on the US military attaché in Paris and an Israeli diplomat. Abdallah was arrested in 1984 and sentenced to life in prison in 1987 for his alleged involvement in these actions.
Legal Battles and Imprisonment
Abdallah's initial appeal for a retrial was rejected in 2002. He was pardoned by a court in Pau in 2003 but the decision was overturned by the Minister of Justice, Dominic Perben. Abdallah has remained in prison ever since.
International Campaign for Release
An ongoing international campaign advocates for Abdallah's release. Supporters maintain that his imprisonment is politically motivated and that he should be granted clemency or a retrial.
