Victor Duruy: A French Historian of Note
Victor Duruy (1811-1894) was a renowned French historian and educator. He made significant contributions to the study of Roman and French history.
Early Life and Education
Duruy was born in Paris on September 11, 1811. He initially studied law and then turned to history. He became a lecturer in history at the prestigious École Normale Supérieure in 1833.
Roman History
In collaboration with Paul Guiraud, Duruy published "Roman History" (1883), a comprehensive work on the history of the Roman Empire. He also authored "Antoninus Pius and His Time" (1888), which focused on the reign of the Roman emperor.
French History
Duruy's later work primarily focused on French history. He wrote "The French Navy under Louis XVI" (1905), a detailed study of the French naval forces during the reign of Louis XVI. He also published "Napoleon: His Life, His Works, His Time" (1921), a comprehensive biography of the legendary emperor, with a preface by Marshal Joffre.
Talierand Biography
Duruy's magnum opus was a four-volume biography of the French diplomat and politician Talleyrand, published between 1928 and 1934. With a preface by François Mauriac, this work became a seminal study of Talleyrand's life and influence.
Honors and Legacy
In 1911, Duruy was elected a member of the prestigious Académie des sciences morales et politiques, part of the renowned Institut de France. His historical works continue to be recognized for their scholarship and insightful analysis. Victor Duruy remains a respected figure in the field of French history.
