Early Life and Education
Born into a distinguished Russian-Canadian family, the subject of this biography was the son of Count P. N. Ignatiev and Princess Natalia Meshchersky. His grandfather was Count N. P. Ignatiev, and his great-grandfather was General Count P. N. Ignatiev.
He received his education at a Canadian university and later earned a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University.
Diplomatic Service
In 1940, he joined the Canadian diplomatic service. From 1956 to 1958, he served as Canada's ambassador to Yugoslavia, and from 1963 to 1966, he was the permanent representative to NATO.
United Nations and University Leadership
From July 1966 to February 1969, he served as Canada's permanent representative to the United Nations. During this time, he was also the President of the United Nations Security Council from 1968 to 1969. From 1972 to 1979, he was Rector of Trinity College at the University of Toronto.
International Diplomacy and Peace Advocacy
In 1984, he was appointed as Prime Minister John Turner's representative on disarmament. He also served as Chancellor of the University of Toronto from 1980 to 1986. He was an outspoken advocate for peace and disarmament throughout his career.
