Early Life and Education
Afanasy Lozovsky was born on February 5, 1888, in Saratov, Russia, to a noble family. He adopted the party pseudonym "Afanasy" and the literary pseudonym "A. Lozovsky." In 1906, he enrolled in the Faculty of Law at St. Petersburg University, graduating in 1913 with an external state exam.
Political Career
In 1903, Lozovsky joined the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDLP) as a Bolshevik. He played a significant role in the 1905 Revolution. From 1907 to 1908, he served on the Moscow District Committee and Moscow Committee of the RSDLP. He also contributed to various newspapers and magazines.
After the October Revolution, Lozovsky became a member of the first Council of People's Commissars, serving as People's Commissar of Justice from October to November 1917. From 1918 to 1921, he held the position of Member of the Presidium and Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Economic Council (VSNKh), responsible for fuel supply.
In 1921, Lozovsky became a member of the Siberian Bureau of the RKP(b) Central Committee and Chairman of the Siberian Industrial Bureau of the VSNKh. He also served as a member of the Ural Bureau of the RKP(b) Central Committee and Chairman of the Ural Economic Council.
From 1923 to 1926, Lozovsky chaired the Oil Syndicate, served as a Member of the Presidium of the VSNKh USSR, and held memberships in the Moscow Committee of the RKP(b) and the Moscow Council. He later became Chairman of the Board of "Donugol" from 1926 to 1929.
In 1929, Lozovsky returned to the VSNKh USSR as a Member of the Presidium. From 1931 to 1933, he served as Deputy Chairman of the State Planning Committee (Gosplan) of the USSR.
Control Commission and Party Activities
From 1933 to 1937, Lozovsky was a member of the Bureau of the Soviet Control Commission under the Council of Ministers of the USSR. He was a prominent member of the Bolshevik faction and participated in various conferences and congresses of the party.
Arrests and Executions
Lozovsky faced multiple arrests and exiles during his life. He was arrested in 1910 and exiled to Arkhangelsk Governorate. After his release, he resumed his activities but was arrested again in 1916 and exiled to Irkutsk Governorate. After the February Revolution in 1917, he returned to Moscow.
Tragically, Lozovsky was arrested again in June 1937 during the Great Purge. He was sentenced to death by the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR and executed on December 30, 1938. His burial site is located at the Donskoye cemetery.
Posthumous Rehabilitation
Lozovsky was posthumously rehabilitated in 1956, restoring his reputation and acknowledging the injustices he faced during the Stalinist era.
