Biography of Georgy Sorokin
Georgy Sorokin was a participant of the Great Patriotic War and a Hero of the Soviet Union. He served as a tank commander in the 51st Tank Brigade within the 3rd Tank Corps.
Early Life and Education
Georgy Sorokin was born in Novocherkassk, Russia, into a family of civil servants. He spent his childhood and youth in the city, where he completed his education at Novocherkassk Secondary School. After finishing school, Sorokin worked in a collective farm.
Military Service
In July 1942, Sorokin was drafted into the Red Army. Later that year, he graduated from the Poltava Tank School. He was involved in combat on the Eastern Front starting from January 1944, serving as a tank commander in the 51st Tank Brigade within the 3rd Tank Corps.
Heroic Actions and Death
On August 3, 1944, during the defense against enemy counterattacks near the settlement of Charna, near Minsk-Mazowiecki, Georgy Sorokin destroyed four enemy tanks, twenty armored personnel carriers, and numerous enemy soldiers. He continued to fight even after his tank caught fire, ramming an enemy tank with another tank. Sorokin was wounded but remained in battle, transferring to another tank.
Tragically, Georgy Sorokin lost his life on March 22, 1945. He was buried in Mysliborz, Poland. He was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on March 24, 1945, along with the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd Class.
Commemoration
Georgy Sorokin's name was immortalized by having a street in Novocherkassk named after him, and a bust of him was installed in the city. Memorial plaques were also placed in schools number 5 and 8, the Pioneers' House in Armavir, and on a street in Novocherkassk to honor his memory.
