Childhood and Early Life
Venjamin Ivanovich Lakhonin was born into a working-class family in Russia. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised in an orphanage. Despite these challenges, Lakhonin persevered and completed seven years of schooling at Pushkin School in 1927.
Career in Forestry and Aviation
After working two years as a laborer in a brick factory, Lakhonin attended the Forestry Technical College in Oranienbaum. He served as a senior technician at the Central Scientific Research Institute of Forestry in Leningrad and later as a foreman in the Kashinsky forestry in the Leningrad region.
In 1933, Lakhonin joined the Red Army and completed the Kharkov Military School of Aerial Navigators and Bombardıers in 1937. He became a squadron navigator in the 22nd Long-Range Bombardment Aviation Regiment, serving in the Far East.
World War II
With the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War in 1941, Lakhonin's regiment was transferred to the front. In August-September 1941, as part of Commander Tikhonov's squadron, Lakhonin participated in three night bombing raids on Berlin.
Hero of the Soviet Union
On September 16, 1941, Lakhonin was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his exceptional bravery and leadership in combat. He received the "Golden Star" medal, number 516.
Tragic Demise
In the aftermath of his heroic exploits, Senior Lieutenant Lakhonin was wounded in combat. He wrote to his wife from the hospital on November 3, 1941, expressing his determination to return to the fight. On December 22, 1941, however, Captain Lakhonin was killed in an aviation accident.
Legacy
Lakhonin's legacy as a valiant warrior and a dedicated patriot continues to inspire generations. A memorial plaque commemorating his heroism is displayed at School No. 1 in the city of Rasskazovo, Tambov Oblast.
