Georgy Kondratyev: A Journey Through Football
Early Beginnings and Rise to ProminenceGeorgy Kondratyev, born in the Soviet Union, began his athletic endeavors by participating in various sports, including track and field in regional competitions. Later, he entered the Vitebsk Technical College for Physical Culture and devoted himself to football. Kondratyev joined the training group of Vitebsk's Dvina team and eventually played for its main squad in the Soviet First League. In his two seasons with Dvina, he showcased his prowess as a goal-scorer, netting 11 goals in both 1978 and 1979.
Breaking into the Big Leagues with Minsk Dynamo
In 1980, Kondratyev's talent caught the attention of Minsk Dynamo, who were in need of a forward. He quickly established himself in the starting lineup, making 11 appearances in his first season. However, the following season was less successful, with Kondratyev spending most of it in the reserve team.
Undeterred, Kondratyev made a brief foray into the Brest Dvina team in 1981 while simultaneously serving in the military. However, he was eventually called back to Minsk and became a mainstay for Dynamo. He also had the honor of captaining the team for a season.
International Career and Return to Minsk Dynamo
Kondratyev's performances for Minsk Dynamo earned him a call-up to the Soviet national team in 1984. He played in 14 international matches, starting in five of them, and scored four goals. His international career ended abruptly following the dismissal of coach Eduard Malofeev in 1986.
Upon Malofeev's return to Minsk Dynamo in 1988, Kondratyev's playing time decreased significantly, and he scored only one goal. This led to his departure from the club, and he moved to Cherno More Odessa in 1989.
Career Decline and Coaching Journey
Kondratyev spent several seasons with Cherno More before briefly joining Lokomotiv Moscow in 1991. He also had a brief stint with St. Pölten in Austria in 1991. In 1992, he played for Metallurg Molodechno in the inaugural Belarusian Premier League, but a suspension for attacking a referee hampered his season.
Kondratyev moved to Ukraine and played for Temp Shepetivka alongside former Dynamo teammate Sergei Gomonov. In 1993, he returned to Germany to play for Wismut Aue, but a visa issue forced him back home.
Kondratyev then embarked on a four-year spell in Finland with KASKO Kankaanpää, where he played with fellow Belarusian footballers Yuri Zheludkov and Valeri Oleinik. After retiring as a player, he completed coaching courses at the Higher School of Coaches and obtained a Pro license in 2010.
Coaching Career
Kondratyev began his coaching career as head coach of Lokomotiv Vitebsk in 2003. Since 2006, he has served as assistant coach of the Belarusian U-21 national team. He took over as head coach of the team in 2009 and has led them to several successes.
