Mariano Garcia Remon: A Biography
Mariano Garcia Remon, also known as Odessa Cat, is a former goalkeeper and current coach of Real Madrid. Born in 1963, his entire sporting career has been closely associated with the Madrid-based club.
A Stellar Goalkeeping Career
Remon guarded the goal for the capital club for 15 years, from 1971 to 1986. He appeared in 117 matches in the national championship and won the Spanish league title seven times. His exceptional performances during the 1980s match against Dynamo Kyiv in Odessa led fans to nickname him the Odessa Cat.
A Transition to Coaching
Following his retirement as a player, Remon pursued coaching and completed coaching courses. He initially began his coaching career as the coach of the youth team at Real Madrid. Interestingly, he was also a mentor to Jose Antonio Camacho, the previous head coach of Real Madrid and a former player for the club.
Coaching Experience
In 1993, Remon took on higher coaching positions and trained clubs such as Albacete, Las Palmas, and Salamanca. He returned to the "royal" club in 1996, this time as the assistant coach.
The New Head Coach of Real Madrid
When the new season of the Spanish football championship began, Real Madrid appointed Mariano Garcia Remon as their head coach. The club, which is patronized by the King of Spain himself, made the change after the previous head coach, Jose Antonio Camacho, resigned just three weeks into his role. Camacho's departure was prompted by a crushing defeat suffered by his team against Bayer Leverkusen in the first match of the Champions League group stage, with a score of 0-3.
Now, at the age of 50, Remon has taken on the responsibility of leading Real Madrid to continued success on the field, drawing upon his extensive experience both as a player and a coach.
