Kleisterlee joined Philips Healthcare in 1974, where he held various positions in production management. From 1981 to 1986, he served as General Manager of Philips Professional Audio Group.
In 1986, he joined Philips Components as Industry Director of Display Components. In 1994, Kleisterlee became Managing Director of Philips' global Display Components division. In 1996, he was appointed President of Philips Taiwan and Regional Manager of Philips Components Asia Pacific. From September 1997 to June 1998, he led Philips Group China.

Gerard Kleisterlee was born in Germany in 1946. He graduated from Eindhoven University of Technology (Netherlands) with a degree in electrical engineering. In 2005, he received an honorary doctorate from Catholic University Leuven, Belgium.
