Born into a noble (ducal) family in Saxony, Germany, Gerold left his wife and children to become a hermit in Friesland.

Later, Count Otto of Jagdberg granted Gerold a significant parcel of land where he built a hermitage. In 970, Gerold donated the land and buildings to the nearby monastery of Einsiedeln.
