Early Life and Education

Born into a musical family, Gervase de Peyer began his studies at the Royal College of Music under the tutelage of Frederick Thurston. At the age of 18, he joined the Navy Band, serving until the end of World War II. Upon his return, de Peyer continued his studies at the college and subsequently in Paris with Louis Cahuzac.

Ensemble and Orchestral Career

In 1950, de Peyer co-founded the Melos Ensemble, where he remained until 1974. He also performed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, and the Philharmonia Orchestra. From 1956 to 1972, he served as the principal clarinet of the London Symphony Orchestra.

Teaching and International Recognition

Beginning in 1959, de Peyer taught at the Royal Academy of Music. In 1969, he was one of the founders of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, residing primarily in New York City. He established a distinguished international career, collaborating with renowned conductors and orchestras.

Notable Collaborations and Recordings

De Peyer performed clarinet concertos by Paul Hindemith and Aaron Copland with the composers conducting. He recorded Claude Debussy's Rhapsody for Clarinet and Orchestra with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Pierre Boulez. His recordings of Mozart, Weber, and Spohr's concertos have received critical acclaim.
