Alexandru Anghelescu: A Romanian General and Statesman
Alexandru Anghelescu was a distinguished Romanian general who played a pivotal role in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 and later served as Romania's Minister of War.
Military Career
Born on January 6, 1839, in Bucharest, Anghelescu joined the military in 1854. He rose through the ranks quickly, becoming the commander of the 2nd Infantry Regiment in 1868 and Colonel in 1870. In 1877, he was promoted to Brigadier General and given command of the 3rd Division.
Anghelescu distinguished himself during the Russo-Turkish War, leading his division in battles in Bulgaria. His most notable achievement was his participation in the attack on the Grivitsa Redoubt outside Plevna.
Political Appointment
Following the war, Anghelescu was appointed Chief of the 4th Division on August 5, 1878. On March 25, 1882, he became Romania's Minister of War, a position he held until July 31.
Later Life and Legacy
In 1883, Anghelescu was named commander of a corps and promoted to Divisional General. In 1891, he retired from active service and joined the Supreme Military Council of Romania. He remained in the army reserve until 1894, when he passed away on April 2, 1915, in Târgu Jiu.
Alexandru Anghelescu's legacy as a military leader and statesman is remembered in Romania. He played a crucial role in the country's independence and modernization, and his contributions to its national defense and military organization continue to be celebrated today.
