Gian Galeazzo Maria Sforza, Duke of Milan
Early Life and AccessionGian Galeazzo Maria Sforza was born in Milan, Italy, on June 20, 1469, to Galeazzo Maria Sforza and Bona of Savoy. Upon his father's assassination in 1476, the seven-year-old Gian Galeazzo inherited the title of Duke of Milan.
Regency and Influence of Ludovico Sforza
His mother, Bona, assumed the role of regent, assisted by her late husband's secretary, Francesco Simonetta. However, his uncle, Ludovico Sforza, gradually gained significant power, effectively ruling Milan while Gian Galeazzo remained the titular duke.
Marriage and Alliance with Naples
To strengthen ties between Milan and Naples, Ludovico arranged Gian Galeazzo's marriage to Isabella of Naples (1470-1524), daughter of King Alfonso II. Leonardo da Vinci decorated the Castello Sforzesco in preparation for the wedding, which took place on February 2, 1489. The couple had three children: Ippolita (1490-1501), Francesco (1491-1512), and Bona (1495-1557), who later became Queen of Poland.
Reign and Assessment
As Duke of Milan, Gian Galeazzo was more of a figurehead than a true ruler. Ludovico Sforza held the reins of power, as noted by the historian of the Sforza dynasty: "The Duke of Bari had no problems in his relations with his nephew previous to his marriage. As nominal ruler of Milan, he invariably received the proper deference due to his high office, but in the taking of any serious decision his uncle would quietly step forward."
Character and Personal Life
Gian Galeazzo was described as handsome and unintelligent, with a tendency towards excessive drinking. Biographer Commynes asserted that his uncle deliberately indulged his nephew's vices to maintain control. Nevertheless, Gian Galeazzo remained close to Ludovico, trusting him implicitly.
Death and Succession
Gian Galeazzo died suddenly in October 1494 at the age of 25. Rumors of foul play accused Ludovico, who proceeded to rule Milan as duke. The circumstances surrounding Gian Galeazzo's death remain shrouded in mystery, but it is evident that his uncle played a significant role in his nephew's life and untimely demise.
