Early Life and Education
George Floyd was born on October 14, 1973, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He grew up in the predominantly African American community of Houston, Texas. As a youth, he excelled in basketball and football. His friends described him as a "gentle giant" due to his tall and athletic stature.
Floyd attended South Florida Community College from 1993 to 1995. He later returned to Houston with the intention of continuing his studies but did not do so. Instead, he joined the Screwed Up Click hip-hop group, adopting the stage name "Big Floyd."
Criminal History
Court records indicate that Floyd served time in federal prison on multiple occasions:
1990s: Convicted of possession of a controlled substance
1998: Attempted armed robbery (10 months)2002: Drug possession (30 days)
2002: Convicted of theft (eight months)
2005: Convicted of cocaine possession (10 months)
2009: Convicted of aggravated robbery (20-year sentence reduced to five years)
In 2009, Floyd was involved in an armed robbery of a pregnant white woman in her home. Floyd pointed a gun at her stomach and forced her into the living room. The robbers ransacked the house and stole valuables.
Later Life and Death
After being released from prison in 2014, Floyd moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, seeking a fresh start. He worked as a security guard in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. In early 2020, he lost his job due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
On May 25, 2020, Floyd was arrested on suspicion of passing a counterfeit $20 bill. During the arrest, Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd's neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, despite Floyd's pleas of "I can't breathe."
Chauvin's actions, along with the assistance of officers Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng, and Tou Thao, led to Floyd's death. The incident was captured on video by several bystanders and sparked widespread protests against police brutality and systemic racism.
Floyd was 46 years old at the time of his death. He is survived by two daughters, ages six and 22.
