Diplomatic Career
On March 28, 1969, the Italian diplomat embarked on his diplomatic journey. His first posting was as Second Secretary at the Italian Embassy in Vienna, Austria, in 1972. He then served as Consul in Freiburg, Germany, from 1974 to 1977.
Overseas Assignments
From 1977 to 1981, he held the position of First Secretary in Lagos, Nigeria. Upon returning to Italy, he became Advisor to the General Directorate for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Senior Diplomatic Positions
In 1984, he was appointed First Counselor at the Italian Embassy in London, United Kingdom. From 1987 to 1991, he served as First Counselor at Italy's Permanent Representation to NATO in Brussels.
Diplomatic Advisor
In 1991, he became the Diplomatic Advisor to the Italian Ministry of Defense. He then took on the role of Deputy Head of the Cabinet of the Italian Foreign Minister from 1994 to 1995.
Head of the Cabinet
From 1995 to 1996, he served as Head of the Cabinet of the Italian Foreign Minister. He held this position until 1999 when he was appointed Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
Ambassador
After his tenure at the OSCE, he served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Russian Federation in Moscow from 1999 to 2001. He then became Director General for Political Affairs at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2001 to 2004.
In 2004, he returned to London as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United Kingdom. He held this position until 2008.
