In New York, Bellows appeared in off-Broadway productions such as "True West" and "Beirut." In 1991, he made his on-screen debut in the United States, appearing in an episode of the renowned TV series "Law & Order" on NBC. He went on to have guest roles in the sitcom "Flying Blind" on Fox in 1992 and the series "Going to Extremes" on ABC in 1993.

In 1994, Bellows had a breakthrough role in the film "The Shawshank Redemption." Initially, Brad Pitt had been cast for the role but dropped out at the last moment.
