Biography of Gilbert Dupré

Gilbert Dupré was a French opera singer (tenor) born on December 6, 1806, in the capital of France. He made his debut in 1825 at the Odéon Theatre, performing the role of Count Almaviva in Rossini's opera "The Barber of Seville." From 1837 to 1849, Dupré was a member of the Paris Opera troupe. His last performance took place in 1851 in the opera "Lucia di Lammermoor."

After retiring from his singing career, Dupré focused on teaching and also tried his hand at composing music. He wrote several operettas, but they did not achieve much success. Dupré was a close friend of the composer Gaetano Donizetti and was the first performer of the roles of Edgar Ravenswood in Donizetti's opera "Lucia di Lammermoor" and Benvenuto Cellini in Berlioz's opera of the same name. He also participated in the first Italian production of Rossini's opera "William Tell."
