Luigi Crepax
Luigi Crepax was an Italian cellist renowned for his ensemble performances. He was the father of famed Italian comics artist, Guido Crepax.
Ensemble Career
Crepax played in several notable trios throughout his career. He performed with pianist Mezio Agostini and violinist Mario Corti, then with pianist Guido Agosti and his younger brother, violinist Attilio Crepax. His final trio featured pianist Carlo Vidusso and violinist Michelangelo Abbado. Abbado's son, Claudio, fondly remembers being immersed in the music of Schubert, Brahms, and Beethoven from an early age, thanks to his father's close association with Crepax.
Notable Performances and Collaborations
In 1928, Crepax premiered Alfredo Casella's Sonata for Cello and Piano alongside the composer. During the 1920s, he served as the principal cellist in the La Scala Orchestra under the baton of Arturo Toscanini.
Teaching and Legacy
Crepax taught for many years at the Milan Conservatory, where his students included renowned cellists Massimo Amphiteatrov and Antonio Janigro. He also prepared editions of several works by Luigi Boccherini.
