Born on April 17, 1911, in Massachusetts, Rankin made his Western debut as Reverend Simon Peter Wheedle in "Ghost Town" (1956). He followed this with appearances in "Frontier" (1956), "Broken Arrow" (1957), "Black Patch" (1957), and "State Trooper" (1958).
Television Appearances
Rankin became a familiar face on television, appearing as a guest star in popular shows such as "Highway Patrol," "The Millionaire," "The Loretta Young Show," "Fireside Theater," and "Lassie." He also had notable roles in "Dragnet," "Perry Mason," "The Untouchables," "Tales of Wells Fargo," "Have Gun - Will Travel," "Overland Trail," "The Man From Blackhawk," "The Texan," and "Riverboat."
Later Roles and Final Appearance
In the later stages of his career, Rankin joined the cast of the NBC series "The Long, Hot Summer" and appeared in the film "Midnight Cowboy" (1969). His final role came as a bus driver in John Carpenter's "Assault on Precinct 13" (1976).
