Early Life and Education
Ginette Petitpas Taylor was born and raised in Dieppe, New Brunswick, as the youngest of nine children. She went on to pursue a Bachelor's degree in social work at the Université de Moncton.
Career in Social Work
After graduating, Petitpas Taylor worked as a social worker with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) in Saint John. She then spent 23 years as a social worker and victim crisis coordinator with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Moncton. In these roles, she provided crisis counseling to crime victims, intervened in domestic violence cases, and assessed risk factors in domestic violence situations.
Community Involvement
Petitpas Taylor has actively participated in her community. She served as Chair of the New Brunswick Advisory Council on the Status of Women from 2004 to 2008 and was a member of the Equal Pay Coalition. She has also volunteered with various organizations, including the Coalition Against Abuse in Relationships and the Canadian Mental Health Association Suicide Prevention Local Committee in Moncton.
Entry into Politics
Petitpas Taylor began her political career by winning the 2015 Canadian federal election for the Liberal Party in the riding of Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe. She was sworn into the Queen's Privy Council in February 2016. She successfully defended her seat in the 2019 election, earning 42% of the vote against her Conservative opponent.
Government Positions
Petitpas Taylor has held several government positions. She served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance from January 30 to August 28, 2017. In August 2017, she was appointed Minister of Health. On October 26, 2021, she took on the roles of Minister of Official Languages and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
