Early Life and Education

Giorgio Abetti was born in Padua, Italy, on October 12, 1882, to Antonio Abetti, an astronomer. He studied at the University of Padua under his father and graduated in 1904 with a degree in physics.

Early Career

Abetti began his career at the observatory of the Roman College in Rome. In 1910, he worked at the Yerkes and Heidelberg Observatories, the Mount Wilson Observatory, and the Rome Observatory.

Director of Arcetri Observatory

In 1921, Abetti succeeded his father as director of the Arcetri Observatory and became a professor at the University of Florence. He held these positions until 1952.

Scientific Contributions

Abetti's research focused on astrophysics and solar physics. He made significant contributions to the study of solar spots, discovering the variation in gas flow velocity (the Evershed effect, sometimes referred to as the "Evershed-Abetti effect").

International Recognition

Abetti was a founding member of the International Astronomical Union and served as its vice president in 1938. He was also a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and received numerous awards, including the Janssen Medal of the French Astronomical Society (1937).

Later Years and Legacy

From 1952 to 1970, Abetti served as president of the National Optical Institute in Florence. He also founded the Italian Astronomical Society in 1920 and was its president from 1953 to 1964. Abetti passed away on November 24, 1982, in Florence.
