Giselle Mackenzie, a Canadian-American singer, was best known for her performances on the popular television program 'Your Hit Parade'. She was born Giselle Marie-Louise Marguerite Lafleche in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She studied music at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Ontario, specializing in violin and vocals. For some time, she hosted her own radio program before moving to Los Angeles in 1951. Four years later, Giselle became a naturalized American citizen.
Early Career
Mackenzie stood out from her peers with her vibrant, resonant voice and impeccable control. She recorded her albums and singles under the guidance of various studios, including 'Capitol' and 'RCA'. In 1953, she reached the sixth position on the UK singles chart with her record 'Seven Lonely Days'. Her most popular song, released in 1955, was 'Hard To Get'.
Multi-Talented Artist
In addition to her singing career, Mackenzie also played the violin, which she had learned during her time at the conservatory. She frequently performed comedic acts alongside her mentor, Jack Benny. Giselle was a frequent guest on various television programs during the heyday of television, such as 'The Jack Benny Program', 'The Dinah Shore Chevy Show', and 'The Ed Sullivan Show'. She also performed concerts in Las Vegas and many other cities in North America.
Later Years
Mackenzie could often be heard on the radio, primarily performing in other stars' programs, such as Bob Crosby and Mario Lanza. For a period from 1952 to 1953, she toured the country with Benny. It was on his advice that she joined 'Your Hit Parade', and it was during this time that she turned her song 'Hard to Get' into a true hit. In her later years, Mackenzie primarily worked in musical theaters, starring in productions such as 'Mame', 'Gypsy', 'The Sound of Music', and 'Hello, Dolly!'. In the 1990s, she made guest appearances in several television series. For her contributions to the entertainment industry, Mackenzie received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Legacy
Giselle Mackenzie passed away in 2003 at the age of 76 from colon cancer. At the time of her death, she left behind a lasting legacy in the music industry. Her powerful voice and versatile talents continue to be remembered and celebrated today.
