Early Life and Resistance ActivitiesBorn in Rome to the distinguished civil law expert Filippo Vassalli, Giuliano Vassalli went on to study law at the prestigious Sapienza University. In the midst of World War II, he became an active participant in the Resistance movement. In a daring mission, he played a pivotal role in organizing the escape of future Italian presidents Alessandro Pertini and Giuseppe Saragat from the Regina Coeli prison. However, he was subsequently arrested by the fascists and subjected to brutal torture by the SS. Through the intervention of Pope Pius XII, he was released shortly before the liberation of Rome by Allied forces in 1944.
Academic and Legal Career
After the war, Vassalli established himself as a renowned lawyer and university professor. He taught law at various esteemed institutions, including the University of Urbino, Pavia, Padua, Genoa, Naples, and Rome, where he culminated his academic career in 1990. His contributions as an educator and scholar in the fields of law and criminal procedure were widely recognized.
Political Engagement
Vassalli entered the political arena as a municipal councilor and leader of the Italian Socialist Party (PSI) group in Rome (1962-1966). Subsequently, he served as a member of the Chamber of Deputies (1968-1972) and the Senate (1983-1987). During this period, he held the position of leader of the PSI parliamentary group.
Minister of Justice and Constitutional Court Judge
In 1987, Vassalli was appointed Minister of Justice, a role he held until 1991. He assumed his new responsibilities amidst significant challenges, including the fight against organized crime and the implementation of important judicial reforms.
Following his tenure as Minister, Vassalli was named to the Italian Constitutional Court in 1991. From 1999 to 2000, he served as President of the Court, overseeing the interpretation and safeguarding of the Italian Constitution.
Later Life and Honors
Vassalli retired from the Constitutional Court in 2000. He was the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, the Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, and the Gold Medal for Contributions to Education, Culture, and Art.
