Early Life and Education
Giulietto Chiesa was born in Acqui Terme, Italy, where he later studied journalism. His journalistic career began in 1979.
International Reporting
In 1980, Chiesa wrote his first book, "Destination: Tehran," about the failed attempt to free hostages from the US Embassy in Tehran. From 1980 to 1989, he served as a correspondent for the Italian newspaper L'Unità in Moscow. He subsequently worked in Washington, D.C., at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars' Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies.
Special Correspondent and Political Analyst
In 1990, Chiesa became a special correspondent and political analyst for the Italian newspaper La Stampa. He also collaborated with numerous other media outlets in Italy, Russia, and beyond. His articles and commentaries were frequently published in Russian newspapers and magazines.
Television and Radio Commentary
Chiesa collaborated extensively with Italian public television (Canale 3 RAI) and the private Channel 5. He provided political commentary on radio stations such as Radio Free Europe, Vatican Radio, and Radio Svizzera.
Association Planet
In 1997, Chiesa founded the Association Planet, a research organization focused on globalization.
Books on the USSR and Russia
Chiesa authored seven books on the Soviet Union and Russia. His works examined the transition to democracy, the collapse of the USSR, and the challenges facing Russia in its post-Soviet era.
Critical Views on Russian Capitalism
In his later works, Chiesa criticized the shortcomings of Russia's market economy. He believed that Russia's elite lacked an understanding of their own country, which had led to avoidable hardships. Chiesa's analysis was informed by his extensive experience reporting on Russia and his deep commitment to objective journalism.
