Giulio Alessio: Economist, Politician, and Anti-Fascist

Early Life and Education

Giulio Alessio was an Italian economist and politician born in Padua, Italy. He pursued a career in academia, becoming a professor of public finance and financial law at the University of Padua.

Political Career

Alessio entered politics in 1897 as a deputy for the Extreme Left party, later joining the Italian Radical Party. He held numerous government positions throughout his career, including Undersecretary of Finance under Prime Minister Sonnino (1906), Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies (1913-1919), Minister of Post and Telegraphs (1919), Minister of Industry and Commerce (1920-1921), and Minister of Justice (1921).

Anti-Fascist Activism

Alessio was a staunch anti-fascist. In 1925, he was among the signatories of the "Manifesto of Anti-Fascist Intellectuals," a response to the "Manifesto of Fascist Intellectuals" that had been published earlier that year. The Anti-Fascist Manifesto accused those collaborating with the fascist government of betraying the ideals of the Italian Risorgimento.

Later Life and Legacy

Alessio continued to oppose fascism throughout his life. He passed away on December 19, 1940, leaving behind a legacy as a dedicated public servant and staunch anti-authoritarian figure.
