Giuseppe Cavanna: Italian Goalkeeper, World Champion

Giuseppe Cavanna, an Italian footballer, played as a goalkeeper and is widely recognized for his role in Italy's 1934 World Cup victory.

Early Career

Born in 1905, Cavanna began his career with his hometown club Pro Vercelli, making his Serie A debut in 1925. After a brief stint with Napoli, where he helped the team secure third-place finishes in 1933 and 1934, Cavanna moved to Benevento, a Serie C side. He ended his playing days back at Pro Vercelli.

World Cup Triumph

Despite primarily featuring for Italy's second team, Cavanna earned a call-up to the national squad for the 1934 World Cup under coach Vittorio Pozzo. Although he did not take the field during the tournament, serving as the backup to Gianpiero Combi, he still claimed a World Cup winner's medal.

Family Connection

Interestingly, Cavanna was the uncle of legendary Italian striker Silvio Piola. However, this familial tie did not prevent Piola from fracturing Cavanna's clavicle during a Napoli vs. Pro Vercelli match in the 1930-1931 season, after a collision in the penalty area.
