Gregory van der Wiel - Dutch Footballer
Gregory van der Wiel is a Dutch footballer who plays as a right back for the Amsterdam-based club, Ajax, as well as the national team of the Netherlands. He began his football career at the youth club RKSV DKG, before joining the Ajax youth academy in 1996. After six years, he moved to the youth team of "Haarlem" in 2002, but returned to Ajax three years later.
Early Career
Gregory van der Wiel made his debut for the Ajax first team on March 11, 2007, in a match against Twente in the 2006/2007 season of the Netherlands' championship. He played the full match, and his team secured a 4-1 away victory. Throughout the 2006/2007 season, van der Wiel played a total of four matches. In the 2007/2008 season, he won the Dutch Super Cup and finished second in the championship, with Ajax narrowly losing out to PSV. In the 2008/2009 season, van der Wiel established himself as a key player for the club. On March 1, 2009, he scored his first goal for Ajax in a match against Utrecht, with the team winning 2-0.
International Career
Van der Wiel made his debut for the Netherlands national team on February 11, 2009, in a friendly match against Tunisia. He came on as a substitute in the 85th minute, replacing John Heitinga, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw. On March 28, 2009, van der Wiel made his official debut for the national team in a World Cup qualification match against Scotland. He played the full match, and the Netherlands won 3-0.
Achievements
Van der Wiel has achieved several honors throughout his career. He was a runner-up in the Dutch championship three times in 2007, 2008, and 2010. He has also won the Dutch Cup twice in 2007 and 2010, as well as the Dutch Super Cup in 2007. In addition, van der Wiel was a silver medalist in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
