Nikolai Nikolaevich Dobrokhotov: A Pioneer in Soviet Metallurgy

Early Life and Education

Nikolai Nikolaevich Dobrokhotov, a prominent Soviet metallurgist, was born in Arzamas, Nizhny Novgorod Governorate. His father, Nikolai Nikanovich Dobrokhotov, was a telegraph operator, while his mother, Maria Fyodorovna Vladimirskaya, was a graduate of the Smolny Institute and the daughter of a State Duma deputy. Dobrokhotov was the eldest of 12 children, and several of his maternal uncles and aunts were actively involved in social and political activities.

In the absence of a high school in Arzamas, Dobrokhotov was sent to Nizhny Novgorod, where he entered the real училище in 1900. In 1907, he successfully passed the competitive examination to enter the Mining Institute of St. Petersburg, where he studied in the Mining and Factory Department. The institute was renowned for its distinguished faculty, including Yevgeny Fyodorov in crystallography, Nikolai Kurnakov in chemistry, and Alexander Ioffe in thermodynamics.

Career in Metallurgy

During his student years, Dobrokhotov actively participated in the metallurgical club and gained practical experience working at metallurgical plants. Upon graduating in 1914, he worked at the Perm Cannon Factory from 1914 to 1917.

In 1920, Доброкhotov returned to academia as an assistant professor at the Mining Institute of St. Petersburg. During this time, he established himself as a promising metallurgist with his research in gas furnace technology.

In 1924, Dobrokhotov was appointed head of the Department of Steel Metallurgy and Furnace Theory at the Ural Polytechnic Institute. In 1926, he was confirmed as a professor in the field of steel metallurgy.

Career Highlights and Challenges

In 1929, Dobrokhotov traveled to the United States and Germany to study metallurgical factories. However, in 1930, he was arrested in Sverdlovsk on charges of sabotage. Many other scientists and faculty members of the Ural Polytechnic Institute were also apprehended.

With the intervention of Maxim Gorky's wife, Dobrokhotov was released from custody and moved to Moscow in 1931. He worked at the Central Scientific Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering, conducting research in gas furnace technology.

In 1935, Dobrokhotov became the head of the Department of Steel Metallurgy at the Dnipropetrovsk Metallurgical Institute. In 1938, he was awarded a doctorate in technical sciences.

In 1939, Dobrokhotov was elected as an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. He was also awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor for his contributions to ferrous metallurgy.

Later Career and Recognition

During World War II, Dobrokhotov worked with 16 factories, providing technical assistance in gas furnace technology and steel metallurgy. He was honored with the "For Valiant Labor in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945" medal and badges of distinction from the tank and metallurgical industries.

After the war, Dobrokhotov moved to Kiev, where he became the head of the Steelmaking Department at the Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. He also served as the head of the Department of Steel Metallurgy and Industrial Furnaces at the Kiev Polytechnic Institute from 1944 to 1950.

In 1949, Dobrokhotov founded the Gas Utilization Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and served as its director. He was awarded the title of Honored Scientist and Technician of the Ukrainian SSR in 1951.

Dobrokhotov was recognized with the Order of Lenin in 1954 and a second Order of the Red Banner of Labor in 1958. He passed away on October 15, 1963, in Kiev.

Legacy

Nikolai Nikolaevich Dobrokhotov's pioneering work in gas furnace technology, steel metallurgy, and industrial furnaces significantly contributed to the development of the Soviet metallurgical industry. His contributions to education and research continue to inspire future generations of metallurgists.
