Givi Berikashvili: A Georgian Acting Icon
Early Life and EducationGivi Zakharievich Berikashvili was born on May 15, 1933, in the village of Kolagi, Gurjaani district, Georgian SSR. In 1956, he graduated from the acting department of the Tbilisi State Institute of Theater and Film.
Acting Career
Berikashvili began his acting career in 1966 with a role in the film novella "The Prize." His final on-screen performance came in 2009, when he played Sancho Panza in the comedy-parable "Chained Knights."
Most notably, Berikashvili gained fame as "Berik" in the legendary short film series "Trio" by Rezo Gabriadze, which featured him alongside Kahi Kavsadze and Baadur Tsuladze. Another iconic role was his portrayal of Dato Tutashkhia in the seven-part "ethnic drama" "The Shores" (1977), based on the novel by Chabua Amirejibi.
Berikashvili served as an actor at the Tbilisi Academic Theater named after K. Marjanishvili.
Awards and Recognition
Throughout his career, Givi Berikashvili received numerous awards, including the Kote Marjanishvili Prize, the Shota Rustaveli Prize, and the Ippolyte Khvichia Prize.
Death
Givi Berikashvili passed away on April 10, 2017, at the age of 83, due to complications from pneumonia. He left behind a legacy as one of Georgia's most beloved and renowned actors.
