Before taking up marathon running, Burrill led an active lifestyle. She enjoyed activities such as mountaineering, desert travel, and horseback riding. However, it was the marathon that truly captured her heart. With the exception of 2008 when her husband passed away and 2009 due to stomach problems, Burrill never missed a marathon in Hawaii.

Every year, Burrill broke her own record and became a local sports celebrity. She would appear on marathon tracks wearing athletic shorts and her participant number proudly displayed on her chest. In 2011, she achieved a time of 9 hours and 53 minutes, which earned her a place in the Guinness World Records as the "oldest female marathon runner in the world."

To stay in shape, Burrill walked extensively, covering up to 70 kilometers per week. Despite her determination, she had to miss the marathon in 2012 due to health issues. Nevertheless, she intended to come to the finish line to cheer on her friends.

When asked about her source of strength to endure such challenging distances at the age of 92, Burrill attributes it to positive thinking and a strong life outlook. She believes that how one feels is directly connected to their optimism.

Burrill's record has been officially recognized by the World Records Academy and the USA Track and Field. She offers a piece of advice to those who wish to live a long and healthy life: "Just get out there and run or walk!" Despite her athletic achievements, Burrill admits to occasionally stopping during her walks and runs to smell her favorite roses.
