Birth and Early Life
Glenn Doman was born in 1920 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to a private investigator. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1940 with a degree in physical therapy.
Military Service
During World War II, Doman volunteered for the U.S. Army infantry the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. After completing infantry officer training at Fort Benning, he was deployed to France as a company commander in the 87th Infantry Division. Doman participated in the Battle of the Bulge and fought in Luxembourg, Holland, Germany, and Czechoslovakia. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
Physical Therapy Career
After the war, Doman dedicated himself to studying the development of the brain in children. In 1955, he founded the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential (IAHP), a non-profit organization dedicated to developing rehabilitation techniques for children with neurological impairments and educational methods for all children (the Doman Method).
Work at IAHP
Doman continued to work at IAHP throughout his life. He authored several bestselling books on child development. In 1966, the Brazilian government awarded Doman a title in recognition of his services to children around the world.
Personal Life and Legacy
Doman was married and had three children. His daughter, Janet, and son, Douglas, also worked at IAHP. Doman's methods and books continue to be influential in the field of child development. His famous quote, "Never, Never, Never, Never Give Up!!!," encapsulates his philosophy of perseverance and the limitless potential of the human brain.
