Gigantic Giant: The Extraordinary Life of Gogea Mitu
Early Life and Record-Breaking HeightGogea Mitu, born in Marsani, Romania, in 1909, was an extraordinary sight. As the eldest of eleven children, his mother was only 16 when she gave birth to him. His towering height of 2.44 meters (8 feet) or 2.49 meters (8 feet 1/2 inch) according to Guinness World Records, earned him a place in history as the tallest professional boxer.
Despite his lack of formal education, Mitu's intelligence was undeniable. He taught himself to read at the age of three, exhibiting the cognitive abilities of a five- or six-year-old. By age 17, his fame had spread, attracting the attention of a Prague circus owner who offered him a job showcasing his unusual stature.
Circus Fame and Boxing Career
Mitu's circus career was brief but lucrative. His exceptional height caught the eye of Umberto Lancia, an accomplished Italian boxer and talent scout. Lancia trained Mitu in the art of boxing and became his manager. In 1934, Mitu traveled to Paris to attend the renowned Parisian School of Boxing, marking the beginning of his boxing career.
Brief Boxing Journey and Tragic End
Mitu's first professional boxing match took place at the Venus Stadium in Bucharest, where he knocked out experienced Italian boxer Saverio Grizza in the first round. His second and final fight was against former Romanian heavyweight champion Dumitru Pavelescu, who also fell to Mitu's powerful knockout punch in the first round.
During a train journey back from Istanbul to Bucharest, Mitu contracted a cold. His manager advised him to recover in Bucharest before returning home to Marsani. However, his condition worsened, and he was admitted to the Philanthropy Hospital. On June 8, 1936, at the age of 26, Gogea Mitu succumbed to tuberculosis, leaving an enduring legacy as the gentle giant of boxing.
