Tony Collins: The Man Who Spent 77 Hours on a Hospital Stretcher
Tony Collins, a British man, achieved a rather unusual record that landed him in the Guinness Book of World Records. He documented the official record for the time spent on a hospital stretcher in a hospital hallway. His record was 77 hours and 30 minutes on a hospital stretcher, and despite a few people claiming to have spent longer waiting for medical attention, Tony is recognized as the Guinness record holder.
Biography of Tony Collins
Tony Collins was 40 years old when he made it into the Guinness Book of World Records in 2001. His record was quite controversial, as he spent 77 hours and 30 minutes on a stretcher in the hallway of Princess Margaret Hospital in Swindon, a town in the United Kingdom.
In February 2001, Tony started feeling unwell and was quickly transported to the hospital by an ambulance. It turned out he had contracted a severe viral infection, requiring him to stay in the hospital for necessary treatment. Unfortunately, there were no available beds in the wards, and Tony was instructed to settle on a stretcher in the hallway and wait. It was from that moment that Tony began counting the time, which eventually became a record.
After a few days, a space became available for Tony, and he was finally admitted to a proper hospital room after 77 hours and 30 minutes. During his time on the stretcher, Tony, who suffers from diabetes, had a difficult experience. His main complaint was the lack of personal space, as he lay almost in plain sight, completely dependent on the nurses for his hospital routine. However, Tony had no complaints about the staff, as the nurses treated him with understanding and care. Later, after being discharged, Tony returned to the caring nurses with a gift – he brought them a microwave oven as a token of appreciation for their kindness and hard work.
After leaving the hospital, Tony Collins decided that his time spent on the stretcher in the hospital hallway should be made known to the public. He submitted an application to the Guinness Book of World Records, where a new category was created specifically for his case. Ironically, while Tony's submission was being processed, his health deteriorated again, and he found himself in an ambulance on the way to the hospital once more. This time, he was also placed in a hallway on a stretcher, but he failed to beat his own previous record, spending "only" 60 hours there. Interestingly, after his second hospital stay, Tony did not give any more gifts to the staff.
It is known that several people have claimed to have spent more time in hospital hallways than Tony Collins. For example, a woman named June Rogers recounted spending 188 hours on a stretcher at Great Western Hospital, also in Swindon. However, no one has officially surpassed his record to date.
