Gonzalo Lira: A Controversial Life and Career
Early Life and EducationGonzalo Lira was born in the San Fernando Valley and spent his childhood in New York City, Miami, and Guayaquil, Ecuador. He completed his secondary education at St. George's College in Santiago de Chile in 1985. In 1991, he enrolled at Dartmouth College, graduating magna cum laude in 1995 with a Bachelor's degree in History and Philosophy.
Literary and Cinematic Career
Lira's first novel, "Counterparts," was published in English in 1997. He also wrote a Spanish-language novel, "Tomás Errázuriz," in 1998. After moving to Manhattan, he wrote and directed the short comedy film "So Kinky" in 1998. He later worked on video game development, including "Soldier of Fortune." In 2002, he wrote "The Acrobat," which was later acquired by Miramax for a film adaptation. The same year, Lira relocated to Chile, where he wrote and directed Spanish-language feature films, including "Secuestrando a Catalina" (2006).
Rise as a YouTuber and Conspiracy Theorist
From 2017, Lira posted videos on YouTube and BitChute under the pseudonym Coach Red Pill. His content focused on relationships from a conservative perspective. He espoused anti-feminist and misogynistic views, disseminated misinformation about the COVID-19 pandemic, and supported far-right political ideologies, anti-communism, and the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.
Controversies and Arrest
Lira moved to Ukraine in 2016. He was detained in May 2022 and charged with attempting to flee to Hungary while under house arrest. He was diagnosed with pneumonia while in custody and died in pre-trial detention in early 2024.
