Folk Musician, Author, and Performer

Gordon Bok is a renowned folk musician, author, and performer. He first gained recognition with his self-titled debut album, which was produced by Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul, and Mary and released in 1965 on Verve Records Folkways imprint. His second album, "A Tune for November," was released on Sandy Paton's Folk-Legacy label in 1970. Bok continued to collaborate with Folk-Legacy for a long time, although his later works, starting from the early 1990s, were released on his own label, Timberhead Music.

Part of a Vocal Harmony Trio

For a long time, Bok was best known as part of a trio with Ed Trickett and Ann Mayo Muir. Together, they created beautiful vocal harmonies accompanied by Trickett's dulcimer and guitar, and Muir's harmonica and flute. Bok is skilled in playing both six-string and twelve-string guitars. When playing classical guitar, he combines the highest level of skill with the expressiveness of Latin American guitar music. He also plays a self-made instrument called the "cellamba," a six-string fretted cello.

Songs Inspired by Life Among Bay Workers

As a songwriter, Bok draws inspiration from his experiences living among boat workers in the Maine Bay. He incorporates the untuned voices of fishermen and other sea laborers into his songs, creating haunting ballads. Occasionally, especially in his best works from the 1970s, he delves deep into the realms of North Atlantic sea legends. Breathing life into these Selkie legends and boat spirits, he explores free-form recordings such as "Seal Djiril’s Hymn" or cantefables like "Saben the Woodfitter," where vocal parts intertwine with long oral narratives.

A Collector of Folk Songs

In addition to creating his own songs, many of which have roots in the folklore of the New England coast and are created within its tradition, Gordon Bok actively collects folk songs. His repertoire includes contemporary songs written by his friends from North America, Australia, and the British Isles. Additionally, he sings folk songs from Italy, Portugal, Mongolia, Latin America, and the Gaelic Hebrides, among many other corners of the globe. He does not limit himself to English-language folklore but excels in various traditions from around the world.
