Duke of Lower Lorraine

Gozelo II was the second son of Duke Gozelo I of Lorraine. Upon the death of his father in 1044, Emperor Henry III seized the opportunity to divide Lorraine once more, unwilling to allow the concentration of power in the region. Upper Lorraine and the Margraviate of Antwerp were granted to Gozelo I's elder son, Godfrey II, who had been his father's co-ruler in recent years.
Reign
Gozelo II was appointed Duke of Lower Lorraine. However, his reign is largely unknown. Based on the account of the chronicler Hermann of Reichenau, who referred to Gozelo as "impotent" (Latin: ignavus), historians believe that he was incapacitated, possibly by mental disability.
End of Reign
In 1046, Lower Lorraine was transferred to Frederick II of Luxembourg. It is likely that Gozelo had died by this time. The circumstances and exact date of his death are unknown.
