Education and Early Career

Gerhard Kuehl (1853-1927) began his artistic journey at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts (1867). Subsequently, he honed his skills at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich (1870).

Parisian Sojourn and Artistic Explorations

From 1878 to 1889, Kuehl resided in Paris, immersing himself in the vibrant art scene. He traveled extensively to Italy and the Netherlands to study the works of Old Masters.

Artistic Achievements and Impact

In 1895, Kuehl became a professor at the Dresden Academy. In 1902, he founded the artistic group "Elbier." He was an active member of the avant-garde Berlin Secession, showcasing his works in their exhibitions (e.g., in 1912). Kuehl continued to teach until his passing.

Thematic and Stylistic Focus

Kuehl's artistic repertoire encompassed both urban landscapes, particularly architectural depictions of Dresden and his hometown Lübeck, and canvases addressing socially significant issues. His talent was recognized early in his career.
