Life and Early Career
Gohar Bakhshaliyeva, a renowned Azerbaijani orientalist and Arabist, was born in 1954 in Barda. In 1977, she graduated with honors from the Oriental Studies Faculty of Azerbaijan State University, specializing in teaching Eastern languages and literature.
Academic Achievements
Her academic journey continued with a PhD in 1996, preceded by a Candidate of Sciences degree in 1984. Dr. Bakhshaliyeva has authored four monographs, ten books, and over 120 scientific articles and reports, with 23 published in prestigious international publications.
Institutional Leadership
Dr. Bakhshaliyeva commenced her professional career in 1977 as a senior laboratory assistant at the Institute of Oriental Studies, Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS). Over the years, her roles within the institute progressed from junior research associate to deputy director for science (1993-1997). Since 1997, she has served as the Director of the institute.
Parliamentary Service
Dr. Bakhshaliyeva's accomplishments extend beyond academia. She served as a deputy in the Milli Mejlis (Parliament of Azerbaijan) during its second, third, and fourth terms. Notably, she chaired the Milli Mejlis delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the inter-parliamentary working group on Azerbaijan-Egypt cooperation.
Research Focus
Dr. Bakhshaliyeva's research endeavors center on ancient and contemporary Arabic literature, Arabic-Azerbaijani literature, Arabic-language sources, and literary connections between Arabic and Azerbaijani cultures.
Mentorship and Editorial Contributions
Under her guidance, 12 PhD dissertations in "World Literature (Arabic Literature)" have been successfully defended. She has edited and prepared numerous scientific works for publication, covering diverse subjects in contemporary Oriental Studies.
International Collaborations
Dr. Bakhshaliyeva has actively represented Azerbaijani orientalist scholarship globally, participating in international conferences and collaborating with scholars from Turkey, Russia, Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Syria, UAE, France, England, Italy, Hungary, Romania, China, Malaysia, and Indonesia, among others.
Academics and Research Councils
She currently chairs the Dissertation Defense Council in "Literature of Turkic Peoples" and "World Literature," and the Problem Council for the Coordination of Oriental Studies. Additionally, Dr. Bakhshaliyeva serves as the editor-in-chief of the journals "Scientific Research" and "Azerbaijani Oriental Studies."
