Biography of Grace Moore

Grace Moore, an American opera soprano and actress, was born on December 5, 1898 in the small town of Del Rio in the state of Tennessee. Her parents were Richard Lawson Moore and Jane Moore. When Grace was still a child, her family moved to Jellico, where she completed high school before attending college in Nashville. After graduating, Moore initially moved to Washington and then to New York, where her musical career began.

Early Career

Moore's Broadway debut took place in 1920 in Jerome Kern's musical "Hitchy-Koo," alongside Raymond Hitchcock in the lead role. In 1922 and 1923, she appeared in two episodes of Irving Berlin's musical revue at the Music Box Theatre.

Operatic Success

On February 7, 1928, Grace made her opera debut at the Metropolitan Opera as Mimi in Giacomo Puccini's "La Boheme." She reprised the same role at the Opera-Comique in Paris in September of the same year and at Covent Garden in London in 1935. During her sixteen seasons at the Metropolitan Opera, she performed in various Italian and French operas, as well as taking on leading roles in works such as "Tosca," "Manon," and "Louise." Her portrayal of Louise is considered the most significant role of her musical career.

Film Career

In 1930, Moore made her film debut, playing the role of Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind in the movie "A Lady's Morals." That same year, she appeared alongside opera singer Lawrence Tibbett in the film adaptation of the operetta "New Moon." In 1934, Moore signed a contract with Columbia Pictures and starred in six films. She received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her role in the film "One Night of Love" in 1935. Her last film role was in 1939 in a shortened adaptation of the operetta "Louise" by Gustave Charpentier.

Personal Life and Honors

In June 1931, Grace married Spanish actor Valentin Parera. In 1932, she appeared on Broadway in the short-lived operetta "DuBarry." Moore was awarded the Gold Medal by the Society of Arts and Sciences in 1935 for her significant achievements in the entertainment industry. In 1936, she received the national medal "Ingenito et Arti" from the King of Denmark, and in 1939, she became a Knight of the Legion of Honor. During World War II, Moore participated in the USO program, entertaining American troops abroad.

Tragic End

Grace Moore tragically died in an airplane crash on January 26, 1947, at Copenhagen's Kastrup Airport at the age of 48. Among the other victims was Prince Gustav Adolf, the heir to the Swedish throne. In 1953, American actress Kathryn Grayson portrayed Grace Moore in the film "So This Is Love," based on her biography. Moore was posthumously awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contributions to the film industry.
