Greg Turkington: A Life in Music, Comedy, and Writing
Greg Turkington was born on November 25, 1967, in Darwin, Australia, into an American family. He grew up in Tempe, Arizona, and San Francisco, California, and currently resides in Los Angeles with his Australian wife, Simone Turkington. As a vegetarian for nearly two decades, Turkington has supported animal rights organizations.
Underground Fanzine and Music Career
In the mid-1980s, Turkington gained recognition as a co-publisher of the underground fanzine "Breakfast Without Meat," which celebrated punk culture and showcased interviews with musicians like Tiny Tim and Jimmy Webb. He also performed with obscure San Francisco bands such as "Hello Kitty On Ice" and "Bean Church" and is rumored to have co-founded the group "Caroliner."
In the early 1990s, Turkington focused on the "Amarillo Records" label, releasing albums by various San Francisco artists in the growing post-punk scene. He played in the bands "Totem Pole of Losers" and "Zip Code Rapists" with John Singer. Turkington also collaborated with Trey Spruance in "Three Doctors," "Bon Larvis Band," the death metal side project "Faxed Head," and the instrumental rock group "Secret Chiefs 3." Many of these bands were featured on "Amarillo Records'" landmark 1996 compilation "You Can't Boar Like An Eabla When You Work With Turkrys," which also included Anton Szandor LaVey, founder of the Church of Satan.
Neil Hamburger: The Anti-Comedian
Turkington's stand-up persona, Neil Hamburger, has bewildered, appalled, and delighted audiences worldwide. Since 1998, Drag City has released several records featuring Hamburger's act. His bizarre and off-putting character has made him a controversial figure in comedy, but he has also garnered a cult following.
Literary and Voice Acting Work
After closing "Amarillo Records" in the late 1990s, Turkington relocated his music projects to Melbourne, Australia. He has since written the book "Warm Voices Rearranged: Anagram Record Reviews" with Brandan Kearney. Turkington served as a contributing editor for the British edition of "Maxim" magazine in 2005-2006. He also revived "Zip Code Rapists" for occasional live performances from 2005-2006.
In recent years, Turkington has provided voice acting for several animated characters in "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" and the "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" spin-off. In 2010, McSweeney's published a parodic screenplay co-written by Turkington and Tim Heidecker.
Legacy
Greg Turkington's eccentricities and diverse artistic pursuits have left an indelible mark on music, comedy, and writing. His anti-comedy persona, Neil Hamburger, continues to push the boundaries of the genre, while his contributions to the underground music scene of the 1990s have cemented his reputation as a visionary tastemaker.
