Early Life and Education

Gretchen Whitmer, a prominent American lawyer and politician, was born and raised in the heart of Michigan. She holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Juris Doctorate from the esteemed Michigan State University.

Political Career

Whitmer's political journey began in the Michigan House of Representatives, where she served two terms from 2001 to 2006. She ascended to the Michigan Senate in 2007 and served as minority leader from 2011 until her election as governor. In 2016, she briefly served as the Ingham County prosecutor.

Road to Governorship

In 2010, Whitmer aspired to become Michigan's Attorney General but withdrew for family reasons. However, she achieved a historic victory in the 2018 gubernatorial election, becoming the first woman and Democratic governor of the state since Jennifer Granholm. On March 10, 2020, Whitmer announced Michigan's first two COVID-19 cases. As cases surged, she issued a statewide stay-at-home order on March 23. The order was extended to May 28, but with certain measures to allow industries to reopen safely. Whitmer also participated in a Black Lives Matter rally despite her earlier concerns about public gatherings during the pandemic.

Leadership Amidst Controversy

Big Ten Controversy

When the Big Ten Conference canceled its fall football season due to COVID-19, Whitmer supported the decision, drawing criticism from President Trump. However, the league resumed play in September, and Whitmer did not interfere despite concerns about the virus's spread on university campuses.

Kidnapping Plot

In October 2020, a group of 13 individuals associated with the Wolverine Watchmen militia was arrested for plotting to kidnap Whitmer and overthrow the Michigan government. The FBI had been tracking the conspiracy since early 2020 and infiltrated the group with an undercover agent.

Personal Life

Whitmer resides in East Lansing, Michigan, and is married to dentist Dr. Marc Mallory. She has two daughters, Sherry and Sydney, from a previous marriage, and Mallory has three sons, twins Mason and Alex, and Winston.
