Early Life and Education

Grigore Vieru was born on February 14, 1935, in the village of Pererâta, Moldavian SSR. After completing his primary education in his hometown, he attended the secondary school in Lipcani. In 1957, while still a student, Vieru published his first collection of children's poems, "Alarm!" ("Тревога"). He graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology at the Ion Creangă Pedagogical Institute in Chișinău in 1958.

Literary Career

After graduation, Vieru worked as an editor for the newspaper "Leninskaya Iskra." In 1959, he published two collections of children's poems, "Făt-Frumos curcubeul" and "Bună ziua, fulgilor!" His work also included a collection of children's poems and stories, "Mulțumesc pentru pace" (1963). In 1965, Vieru's second son, Călin, was born. In 1967, he received the Republican Prize of the Moldavian Komsomol. The following year, his collection of poems in Russian, "Имя твоё," was published and highly praised by critics.

Political Activism

In the 1980s, Vieru became actively involved in the movement for the unification of Romania and Moldova. In 1989, he was elected as a people's deputy of the Moldavian SSR. Vieru participated in numerous nationalist rallies in Chișinău. His political views became increasingly extreme, reflected in his poetry. After 2001, he was in opposition to the ruling Communist Party.

Fatal Accident

On the night of January 15-16, 2009, Vieru was involved in a fatal car accident on the Basarabeasca-Chișinău highway. He was a passenger in a car driven by Gheorghe Munteanu, deputy director of the National Academic Folk Dance Ensemble "Joc." Vieru was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and passed away in the early hours of January 18, 2009.
